2019 Theatre Lab at MASS MoCA

The Lab at MASS MoCA is a fascinating collaboration between Sundance Institute and a major cultural institution that shares our values. The Theatre Lab at MASS MoCA is a two-week development retreat held at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA amid the beauty of the Berkshire Mountains. It provides a private, creative environment for playwrights, directors, composers, and librettists to develop new work with the support of dramaturgs and full casts. Sundance and MASS MoCA share a profound commitment to developing the work of performing artists. Since opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the world's premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams. The museum thrives on making and presenting work that is fresh, surprising, and challenging. The Theatre Lab at MASS MoCA is a pilot project that offers an opportunity and process for an independent-minded community of artists to engage with their work, ask questions, build text, and take risks.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
