The Space Between

Director: Philiane Phang
Screenwriters: Philiane Phang

Description

Serena, a teacher by day and aspiring professional bodybuilder by night, is deep in debt. Her
father, Charles, bedridden after multiple strokes, escalates Serena’s financial burdens. Charles yearns for a dignified death but Serena keeps him alive out of resentment and loneliness. To maintain her bodybuilding lifestyle, Serena moonlights in the BDSM world of muscle worship, a subculture where clients experience sexual gratification by being dominated by and feeling the muscles of professional bodybuilders. Serena develops a deeper relationship with James, one of her regular clients, and her building confidence helps her confront her fractured relationship with her father and gain momentum as a bodybuilder. When Serena discovers her relationship with James is not as it seems, her newfound lease on life crashes to an end leading to a downward spiral.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
