Suga’ - A Live Virtual Dance Performance

Director:

Institute History

  • 2022 Sundance Film Festival

Description

A story of resistance and resilience, Suga’ is a collective immersive experience that features live dance performance as volumetric video in a social virtual reality space. To register for a performance, visit the project in the Gallery on the New Frontier Spaceship and follow the Go To Experience link.

The experience takes audiences on a journey through the historical reality of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the establishment of the sugar industry, which has had a lasting legacy on our world today. Suga’ weaves together movement, family stories, and cultural heritage to reimagine virtual environments once filled with pain and injustice as sites for healing. Suga’ can be viewed via web browser and does not require VR headsets. It also supports SteamVR compatible headsets tethered to a VR-ready Windows PC. The performance utilizes low-cost hardware and open-source software that allows artists to perform from their own living spaces. A discussion with the creative team will directly follow each performance.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
