Prophets and Loss

Institute History

  • 1991 Sundance Film Festival

Description

What does the environmental crisis mean for our society? In this hour-long documental)', made for the BBC, some of the planet's finest minds zero in on this question.

The genesis of Prophets and Loss was the Greenhouse Glasnost conference, held at Sundance in 1989. it was a unique occasion, and in hindsight, seeks to have marked a turning point. The Institute for Resource Management brought together a remarkable range of scientists, industrialists, politicians, media representatives, and other figures.

After gleaning the wisdom of Carl Sagan, Paul Ehrlich, Robert Redford, Chief Oren Lyons and several others, filmmakers Nick-Hart Williams and Gabrielle Kelly move on to the Third World to examine the severe implications facing poorer nations. Their inquiry ends in Moscow with Mikhail Gorbachev and religious leaders from around the world. The aim of the film is to follow the unraveling thread of environmental change, beginning with a consideration of science and industry, then moving into the areas of population and refugees and ending with a focus on the fundamental adjustments humanity must make to preserve our world.
