  • 1990 Sundance Film Festival

Description

In the course of our daily routines, we bear witness to numerous tragedies: pollution, hunger, disease, homelessness. The media supplies us with its own, sometimes even more, graphic images. The common belief that an informed citizen will be moved to action is turned inside out by director Ralph Arlyck. Ironically, while today's technological wonders have created a society of "informed citizens," an enormous gap exists between understanding and action. Current Events examines the impact of all this disturbing information on American social and political activism, asking: "What moves people to action?" Arlyck's lyrical film diary probes with an informal, occasionally humorous, but always sensitive style. Original in content and with a clearly defined voice, Current Events explores with the intention not simply to provoke action, but also to question what we may now be calling action.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
