Description
Louise (Lea Floden) is a woman with dreams. Aspiring for independence from her family, a meaningful relationship and a future as an actress, she unfortunately suffers from an identity crisis which holds her back. She is haunted by the accidental death of her mother which she witnessed at the age of four. Traumatized and without role models, Louise guides her life based on what she can mimic. However, with the help of James Joyce's Ulysses and a fellow named Stanley, Louise discovers she is the woman she thought she would never be.
How To Be Louise is quietly appealing and unsentimental, sprinkled with comedy and told Within the means of its low budget. It is by no means a raw or minimalist film. Complimenting a cast of terrific actors is a strong visual style that shows confidence, control and enormous talent.
Although there are easy comparisons with Susan Seidelman, the tone of each director is independent and unique. Louise offers an introspective study of one woman coping with her own insecurities with a refined poignancy that reveals its sophistication. Vet filmmaker Anne Flournoy keeps her story fresh and alive with a wonderful balance of charm and wit.
