Description
Animator/performance artist Miwa Matryek incorporates the live silhouette of her own body into projections of her exquisitely rendered animations to create breathtakingly beautiful theatrical presentations. Her works each spin philosophical, dreamlike narratives about the evolution of our environment and the agency of human creation with a poetry, scale, and intimacy that penetrate.
Playing with the concept of lucid dreaming, Dreaming of Lucid Living (2007) depicts a world where a woman’s domestic chores magically expand to influence and transform the farthest reaches of the world beyond her home. The act of creation is further engaged in Myth and Infrastructure (2010), where a woman who creates pies and cakes becomes the primordial material for the creation of cities and life-forms on earth. Matryek’s newest work, This World Made Itself, making its world premiere at the 2014 Festival, is a fantastical journey through the history of the earth—from the universe’s epic beginnings to the complex world of humans.
