The Fate of the Short Film

Betsy McLane, the executive director of the International Documentary Association, will moderate a discussion about the future of the production of short films, both fictional and documentary. When the attempt to eliminate several categories at the Academy Awards was squelched last year because of a ground swell of protest, the issue of the short film rocketed to the forefront. Short films are unquestionably a major part of the artistic output of the filmmaking community, but their status for a general audience is problematic, given the difficulty of finding theatrical outlets. On the other hand, they are key stepping stones in the careers of many independents, as well as a unique form of expression in themselves. The panel will include filmmakers and professionals from the industry in a roundtable which will consider various aspects of production and distribution and assess the prominence of the short film.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
