This panel will explore current issues associated with film music in the nineties. Is contemporary film music in a slump, or is it more creative than it's ever been? Has the current mania for temp-tracking pictures with previous, popular film scores and songs contributed to a decline in originality? Has the widespread availability of high-tech toys, from synthesizers to samplers, been a boon to composers or simply provided less-talented writers with more scoring opportunities? What about the use of songs, often to replace conventional film-scoring techniques? Do they best serve the film or the marketing department? Confirmed panelists include composer Stewart Copeland, film-music agent Richard Kraft, and Miramax executive Jeff Kimball. BMI's Doreen Ringer Ross will moderate. This panel is sponsored by BMI.
