Independent Film and Its Audiences: The Best and Worst of Times

The good news is independent films enjoy a wider audiences than ever. The bad news is growing fragmentation in the Independent cinema audience requires that filmmakers be increasingly savvy about marketing and distributing their films. Are audiences getting older, and if so, how can younger audiences be recruited? Does today’s proliferation of films auger more “high concept, low budget” films in the future? What strategies can a filmmaker employ to identify specialized audiences? Industry professionals, including Marcus Hu, co president of Strand Releasing; Bert Manzari, senior vice president and head film buyer for Landmark Theatre Corporation; Bingham Ray, co founder of October Films; and Leonard Klady of Variety analyze the current state of the independent film market. The panel will be moderated by Michael Barker, co president of Sony Pictures Classics, and is sponsored by Banner Pictures.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
