Music and Narrative

This panel focuses on thinking musically and explores and exposes the process of creating original music for film. The myriad ways that music functions in film and the impact it has on dramatic content will be examined. We will demonstrate and discuss musical options from songs to silence and ponder these questions: How do creative collaborations between director and composer work? Has the concept of how film and music interrelate changed? What are the differences between the role of music in indie and studio films? The director/composer relationship from spotting sessions to creative collaborations will be analyzed. Doreen Ringer Ross, assistant vice-president of film and TV relations at BMI, moderates the panel, which includes John Waters, director of Pink Flamingos, and Stewart Copeland, rock musician extraordinaire and film composer, as well as Dan Carlin, CEO of Segue Music. This panel is sponsored by BMI.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
