The Work of the Screenwriter

The practice of screenwriting is a much analyzed arena, much of the analysis focusing on specific issues of craft. But the role of the screenwriter within the independent universe depends as much on personal vision and experience as it does on technique. How does one define the writer's role in the independent world? Is there substantial difference between writing for the studios and writing for the increasingly "commercial" independent sector? Much of the best independent writing evolves from the personal. Is the work of the screenwriter a simple translation from the writer's life to the page? How does one work in different media? With adaptations? The panel is moderated by James Schamus, cochair of Good Machine, writer and producer of Ride with the Devil and The Ice Storm.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
