African American Independence: Past Present and Future

In the past year, films by African American directors took a significant share of mainstream box office dollars. Many of the filmmakers responsible for this success have roots in the independent film world. This panel will explore how African American independent film has changed over the past 20 years with an eye toward its relationship to mainstream success and to independent film as a whole. What forces, both internal and external, have affected African American independent film? This discussion will feature directors, producers, and executives who have defined African American film in the past and who will help shape its future.
