Crossing the Line

Over the years, close associations between documentary and fiction film, and the crossover of noted filmmakers from one to the other, have yielded stylistic, formal, and even philosophical changes in both, not to mention some very provocative and influential films. More recently, the blurring of lines between the docs and dramatics in the work of a number of filmmakers has created some fascinating hybrids. We've invited several filmmakers who have worked on both sides of "reality" to talk about what they've taken from their experiences and how they view their distinctions. How do they discover their relationship to certain stories and material? Is a story more suited to one genre or another? Join Fenton Bailey, Steve James, Marc Levin, Penelope Spheeris, Wim Winders, and moderator Peter Brunette for a discussion of fact, fiction, and everything in between.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
