In 1992, when B. Ruby Rich moderated a Sundance panel called “Barbed-Wire Kisses,” Queer Film was in midexplosion–fresh, cutting edge, boundary-pushing and one of the brightest spots in indie film. But if the 90s could be said to have been the breakthrough of gay/lesbian work in mainstream film and television, what’s happened to that edge? And what’s happened to the breakthrough? Has gay/lesbian cinema wound up with a supporting role? Where are all the gays on TV? What happens when you’ve made it, only to be cut back? Has the once vibrant world of independent gay/lesbian work become tame and commercially minded or is there a new New Queer Cinema? B. Ruby Rich evaluates the current state of gay/lesbian film with filmmakers and industry executives.
