The power of culture to represent values, shape identity, disseminate ideas, and even to form collective mentality has been observed since the beginning of civilization. But at a time when this country is deeply divided politically, socially, and morally, we must ask ourselves how and why culture, art, and entertainment have become the battleground for conflicting visions of America. Who are the producers of culture and who are the consumers? Is it the politics of Red or Blue? How do culture and the arts affect the ballot box? And how do artists, who work in shades of grey, view the purpose of their work? We ask a broad spectrum of people to take up this topic. Copresented by the Center for American Progress.
