Sex Stays in the Picture

Every culture has its laundry list of taboos and America has a lot of laundry. The widening influence of conservative values has once again fostered outrage over sexuality, imposed de facto censorship, and laid blame for moral corrosion at the doorstep of art. But it has always been the artists who push boundaries, challenge taboos, and deal openly with issues or questions that society sweeps under the carpet. So why can't America deal with sex? What other taboos do we tuck away, and what does that tell us about who we are? Moderator Geoffrey Gilmore (Director, Sundance Film Festival), Michael Winterbottom (Nine Songs), Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (Inside Deep Throat), Paul Provenza and Penn Jillette (The Aristocrats), John Cameron Mitchell, B. Ruby Rich, Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin), and others talk about sex, taboos, and culture on their terms.

As you use our Online Archives, please understand that the information presented from Festivals, Labs, and other activities is taken directly from official publications from each year. While this information is limited and doesn't necessarily represent the full list of participants (e.g. actors and crew), it is the list given to us by the main film/play/project contact at the time, based on the space restrictions of our publications. Each entry in the Online Archives is meant as a historical record of a particular film, play, or project at the time of its involvement with Sundance Institute. For this reason, we can only amend an entry if a name is misspelled, or if the entry does not correctly reflect the original publication.
