Since the birth of cinema, artists have found within a thin strip of celluloid film myriad forms of
expression and a magical medium through which to tell stories. In this celebration of celluloid, we look at film aesthetics, its intrinsic qualities, and its appeal to filmmakers who have made the artistic choice to employ film as a shooting format.

Join Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight series, Interstellar), Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic World), Rachel Morrison (cinematographer, Fruitvale Station, What Happened Miss Simone?, Dope) and moderator Alex Ross Perry (Listen Up Philip, Queen of Earth).

Alex Ross Perry was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in 1984. He attended NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and worked at Kim’s Video in Manhattan. He made his first film, Impolex, in 2009. His second film, The Color Wheel, was distributed theatrically in America and France in 2012 and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Listen Up Philip came to the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Christopher Nolan is an award-winning filmmaker who has been recognized for his work as a director, writer and producer. His films include Interstellar, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, The Prestige, Insomnia, Memento, and Following. Nolan and his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, also helm their own production company, Syncopy.

Colin Trevorrow’s first feature, Safety Not Guaranteed, won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. He directed 2015’s Jurassic World and will direct Star Wars: Episode IX for a 2019 release. Colin just wrapped principal photography on The Book of Henry, an independent drama from Focus Features starring Naomi Watts, Jaeden Lieberher, Jacob Tremblay, and Sarah Silverman.

Cinematographer Rachel Morrison works at the forefront of cinema, channeling core emotions into arresting imagery. She has lensed seven Sundance films over the past six years including: Dope; the Oscar nominated documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?; and Fruitvale Station. In 2013, she received the Kodak Vision Award for her outstanding achievements in cinematography.
