They’re here, they’re queer, and they’re only teenagers. Saying only may date me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t find Totally F***ed Up totally compelling. Araki has assembled a cast of six racially mixed gay/lesbian teens who resemble the kids you drive by on a Friday night, waiting in line to get into a club. It is with them the true brilliance of this film rests. All unknowns, they spill out their between stylistic intertitles and verite video logging by one of the boys. I have never seen young gays portrayed with so much integrity—in fact I don’t think I have ever seen them portrayed at all. Which, I imagine, is exactly the point. They seem just suddenly to exist in this new decade, fighting off homophobia, feigning interest in old, gay protocol and searching for an identity in their inherited wasteland of Los Angeles. What is refreshing about this film is that no apologies are asked for and none are given.
