Description
An old man recounts an episode from his youth, coloring the narrative with his current concerns about approaching death.
In an old age home in 1996, Abe Brennan's mind turns to the summer of 1921. He is eleven years old and spends his days in search of adventure and mischief with his best friend, Cole. Their life is pagan and wild—a world of games and forays into the dark forests of Hempstead, Massachusetts. It seems like nothing could break up their friendship. Until twelve-year-old Katherine arrives on the scene.
A dark-eyed sexual creature, Katherine unwittingly draws the boys away from each other, causing a series of betrayals that lead to a dangerous childhood illness, and finally to a showdown neither boy will ever forget.
