Description
NINE SCENES ABOUT LOVE is a dark comedy about sex, lies and millennial madness. Set in the hypercharged world of present-day Manhattan, the film tells the stories of ten New Yorkers, each out on their own precarious limb.
In nine discreet, two-character scenes of seduction and sex, we follow ten troubled souls—a prostitute, an impotent ex-cop, a trophy wife, a closeted venture capitalist, an artist at the end of his rope, a bored-and-beautiful rich girl, her cuckolded boyfriend, an aging transvestite, and a Wall Street wannabe in trouble with the law. All of these characters have stories to tell and secrets to reveal, painting, in the process, a comic, dissonant picture of New York City at the end of the century.
The film's unusual structure (inspired by the play LA RONDE written in 1900 by Arthur Schnitzler) features scenes connected like links in a long chain of seduction that ultimately circles back on itself.
The title is meant to be somewhat ironic, as these stories are at least as much about betrayal, lust, money, deception, bad karma and ambition as they are about love.
NINE SCENES ABOUT LOVE is a funny and biting look at desire in the late '90's—a darkly comic take on love and sex in a world gone just a little bit nuts.
