Description

The directing/producing team of Michael Hoffman and Rick Stevenson (Restless Natives, Promised Land) returns to the Festival with its new feature, Some Girls, an ornate and intricate study of human relationships. Principally, the film is a comedy—beginning like an apparent sexual romp—but it acquires depth by adding elements of mystery, farce and drama to explore family, memory, love and spiritual completion.
Michael )Patrick Dempsey), a young American traveler, arrives in Quebec to spend Christmas with his girlfriend, Gabriella (Jennifer Connely). He meets her bizarre family—her two sisters, her beautiful mother and her eccentric, brilliant father. A stranger in a very strange, comical land, Michael is harassed and rejected, and eventually discovers love in a quarter he never expected.
Their most accomplished production, beautifully shot and designed, Hoffman/Stevenson’s Some Girls captures the feel of a contemporary A Midsummer Night’s Dream: mythic fairy tale as romance.
